Wisconsin's Ghosts

Looking for weird?  Wisconsin has it all.  These are just a few of the strangest urban legends that have circulated in the dairy state for many years.  With the exception of the section about Kemper Hall, we can neither confirm or deny any of these claims of paranormal activity.

Aztalan State Park/Rock Lake (Lake Mills, Wisconsin)  One of Wisconsin’s great archeological sites with a long and interesting history.  Aztalan is an ancient Native American campsite. Several burial mounds were found here. There is a museum at the park.  This once thriving Indian community was abandoned, suddenly and mysteriously by its inhabitants.  The mounds are believed, by many to be a hot-spot for paranormal activity. On the bottom of nearby Rock Lake (supposedly linked to Aztalan), conical, or pyramid shaped mounds reportedly have been discovered.

Glenbeulah Graveyard aka Walnut Grove Cemetery - (Glenbulah, Wisconsin)  A graveyard which is home to burial sites that date back to the early 1800s.  A man reportedly hung himself in this graveyard, and is said to be found walking about after midnight.   There is said to be a glowing grave and a pair of shadows that appear on another grave.  This cemetery was featured on Unsolved Mysteries.  Said to be a lost and very curious female spirit who likes to follow visitors around.  Strange noises occur and apparitions are reportedly seen and felt. It is heavily patrolled by police because of vandalism. Secluded on a hill in Glenbeulah, the road leading up the hill to the cemetery is blocked off.  Visitors can still walk up there during posted cemetery hours, usually from dawn until dusk.

Dartford Cemetery - (Green Lake, Wisconsin) The Dartford Cemetery is located in a residential area, and it is widely believed to be haunted. Reported phenomena include: dark figures,  shadows, and apparitions. Noises may also be heard. Most often figures seen are of civil war era soldiers, an Indian chief that once ruled and lived in the Ripon/Green Lake/ Princeton area.  Legend states that he reportedly died while drunk, when he made a bet he could swim across the Fox river. He didn't make it and drowned. The main legend associated with Dartford is a family mausoleum. The children are said to have died of polio.  Legend states that if you sit on top of it, you will be pushed off.

JFK Preparatory School/St. Nazianz Cemetery - (Manitowoc, Wisconsin)  Believed to be very haunted with a strange history. Legend states that several spirits are lurking , along with a curse from the Seminary of the Divine Savior in St. Nazianz. There is also believed to be paranormal activity in the JFK buildings. There is no trespassing allowed and the buildings and grounds are under constant police and video surveillance.

Eagle Road Cemetery - (Juneau, Wisconsin)  People reportedly have visited at night and came back with blood on there hands and arms.  Also, there is a little girl spirit who will walk up to you and then let out an ear piercing scream.  It is said that a man named “Ritter” or “Riter” appears who wants to slit your throat.  The cemetery is heavily patrolled by law enforcement.

Holy Rosary Catholic School - (Kenosha, Wisconsin)   Reports state that at night, there are noises in the pipes in all the bathrooms, hot and cold spots, weird smells down by the cafeteria.  Footsteps have been heard late at night by janitors, and in the Computer Lab/Library books have been scattered across the room.

The Karsten Inn - (Kewaunee, Wisconsin)  This hotel is believed to be haunted by Mr. Karsten, former owner of the hotel.

Kemper Center – (Kenosha, Wisconsin)  This former Episcopal school for girls is believed to be haunted by the ghost of a nun that is seen on or near a five story, wooden, spiral staircase.  The original lakefront mansion on the property was built in 1861 by Charles Durkee, “friend of the working man”, when he was appointed by president Andrew Jackson to the position of Territorial Governor of Utah.  Upon leaving Kenosha, he made his property available to Kenosha Female Seminary, later renamed Kemper Hall.  For over one hundred years, the Community of the Sisters of Saint Mary oversaw the day to day operations of the campus.  It closed its doors for good in 1975.  Since that time, there have been an inordinate amount of ghostly tales associated with the grounds and buildings. (See: Haunted Kenosha: Ghosts, Legends and Bizarre Tales, The History Press, 2009)

St. Killians - (Lake Geneva, Wisconsin)  The church was burned down some years ago, and is said to be haunted by a priest.  It is located off of Townline Rd. There have been many ghost sightings there including odd noises, shadows, footsteps following you, a bell ringing, and other various noises. In 2005, the church was burned down by the lake geneva fire department because it was condemned.  They used the church as training for the fire department. There had been stories of reported of satanic activity going on in the church.  There are also stories involving a statue of the Virgin Mary who would cry tears of blood.  There were other stories of a statue that would chase off trespassers.

Summerwind - (West Bay Lake, Wisconsin)  Reports of shadow people walking the grounds, pin lights float thru the trees, and scariest of all, the foundation and the landscape are said to change at will. They say that if you measure a doorway one minute, and the next, its a few inches larger. What’s strange is that there are beautiful flowers that grow all over the remains of Summerwind during the night, but when you return during the day, there is nothing. - December 2006 Update: Summerwind was purchased by a private party approx 20 years ago. It was under renovations to possibly reopen as a Bed & Breakfast. The owners put a gate up so you could no longer visit the property. It ended up burning down shortly after.  Once dubbed “Wisconsin’s Most Famous Haunted House.” All that remain are the ruins of a once beautiful mansion. There is a long and bizarre history on this place, including: Indian legend, possible murder/corpse found, apparitions, demons, nervous breakdowns, disembodied voices and bizarre shrinking/expanding rooms. This house was so active, that, supposedly, the original owner once began shooting at the resident spirits before fleeing in terror.

Madison - (Wisconsin State Capitol building)  The fourth floor of the south wing is said to be haunted.  While members of the messenger staff have been up their completely alone doors have opened by themselves and strange footsteps have been heard.

Maribel Caves/ Maribell Hotel "Motel Hell" - (Maribel, Wisconsin).  Motel Hell is an old abandoned building reportedly owned by Al Capone close to the Maribel Caves. Witnesses have heard laughing, have seen a little girl in a black dress wearing no shoes on the stairs which go into the caves area. you can hear singing there day or night. near the old stables, visitors have been chased by white light which some of them have seen as a carriage drawn by white horses. also in the old stables the sounds of horses hooves have been heard. The submitter of the update has done some research into hotel hell and it may never have been owned by Al Capone. the first thing to be built there was a "resort" built in the 1800's which was one of those places where people went to be cleansed by the natural spring water which still runs pure and clear there today. when you walk the trails there (it's still open to the public) there is one cave door which has been partially opened due to a rockslide, spring water still runs there.  Long and sordid history that includes  stories of mass murder, death by fire, bootleggers and mobsters and a portal to hell (which, I have heard, is located in the ruins of what once was a fountain in front of the hotel). These stories have either been discredited or are yet to be documented. But, many people who have been there report several unexplainable phenomena. This used to be a health spa in the late 1800’s. At some point, it was turned into a hotel. It is reported by many people to be very haunted and the reports go back many, many years. The reports include: several spirits (some very angry ones), apparitions and ghostly children (mainly seen on the roof and in windows of the hotel), footsteps, moving objects, black magic practices, various odd noises and voices, and feelings of being touched by cold hands, followed and/or threatened. The reports occur at both the hotel and the park. There was a fire in 1985 which destroyed the interior of the hotel, though the structure still stands. The fire supposedly caused an influx in spirit activity. This is a very dangerous place, structurally. People who have gone inside the hotel have been injured due to the disintegration of the structure through age and fire. There are security cameras everywhere and the cops watch it like hawks. The owners of the property are very protective of it and, supposedly, prosecute trespassers to the fullest extent. And, almost everyone who has gotten onto the grounds of the Hotel get caught by the police and fined. It’s a dangerous place, both structurally and spiritually. I’ve heard that you can still view the hotel from a safe and legal distance (the road) where it is still a sight to behold and people have witnessed strange phenomena/

The Phister Hotel - (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)  On the 8th floor, in the hotel, (the storage floor) Mr. Phister is seen walking the halls with his dog. Within the hotel, consist hundreds of paintings of dogs.

The Rave/Eagles Ballroom (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)  This is the place Buddy Holly played his last gig before dying tragically (alongside Richie Valens and the Big Bopper) in a plane crash en route to Clear Lake, Iowa. Many people here have witnessed paranormal activity. A ghost is felt, disembodied sounds of children playing or crying are heard, cold spots as well as negative energy in many parts of the building. Supposedly, the pool room (which is kept locked at all times) and the Eagles Ballroom are the most haunted areas here, but I have heard reports of people feeling strangely and hearing disembodied noises in several areas of the building.

This building built in the late 20's was an all male athletic club. Many areas of the building are very cold even in the heat of summer. The ballroom has access to a door that leads to the dome maintenance room which also leads to the roof has many times been investigated by security after reports of someone throwing things off the roof. When investigated no one is found, when things like empty beer cups and ashtrays have been found below. The basement floor which houses access to the pool viewing porthole and also the boiler room, has a dirt floor that security doing a sweep of the building at closing time, have felt the strong urge to leave by a presence and feeling of coldness that is overwhelming, also accompanied by a strong odor of starch or bleach smell. It is said that after it was closed and reopened as a shelter, a man that ran it was abusive and very intolerable, to the young men that stayed there. His negative energy is felt and reports of his apparition and coldness in the pool area and in the boiler room. As far as his apparition is concerned, they were reported by bar staff accompanying the security during sweeps, they were most likely under the influence of alcohol at the time. A strong sense of negative energy is felt in all parts of the building. Always felt at night when the building closes. Strange noise like shuffling feet and loud bangs can be heard while sweeping the building fro people who may hideout after a show. It may be heard in one area and when looked into the noises are heard in the area that was just secured. Unexplainable feeling of negative energy exists in the building. There is also the ghost of a little girl at the Rave. A worke,r who worked there for a year or so, spent time in the coat check area in the basement. There are catacomb-like hallways that run behind the coat check area. One night during a concert, they heard a little girl laughing coming from the rear hallway. When they got up to look, a wind blew through the room, and a feeling of dread came over them, and in an instant it was over.

Pritchard Park - (Racine, Wisconsin)   A man in all black will approach you. A very pale face and black eyes pierce through you. He will let out an evil growl. Then he will just fade out of sight and then you hear evil laughter.  In 2007, some young would be ghost busters were caught and ticketed here after dark.

SC Johnson Wax Building - (Racine, Wisconsin).  Reported sightings of little girls playing and laughing have been sighted by janitors in a SC Johnson Wax building, which was formally the old St. Mary’s Hospital.

Westlawn cemetery - (Racine, Wisconsin)  Reports of an old-time disappearing cop car and other reports of a glowing tombstone.  Interesting, because most of the stones are flat in this cemetery, although a few raised ones do exist.
